As a doula, I often get asked this question. Choosing a midwife is one of the most personal and powerful decisions you'll make in your pregnancy journey. When you first start meeting with midwives, it can feel exciting and maybe even a little overwhelming. You want to make sure your care aligns with your vision for your birth, but it can be hard to know what to ask. These questions will help you start open, honest conversations and help you find the midwife who truly aligns and supports your birth journey!

First, I would write down things that are important to you regarding your birth plan & how you imagine bringing a life into the world.

Example, “I don’t want to labor on my back” or “I’d like the freedom to move in ways that feel good + natural to me in labor” or “birthing in water is important to me.” Then, I would create questions around that to make sure your midwife supports you. Here are some other important questions:

1. What is your experience as a midwife? What are your qualifications & credentials?

2. What kind of prenatal care do you provide?

3. Can you explain your approach to childbirth and labor support?

4. How do you handle complications during pregnancy or labor?

5. What pain relief options do you offer during childbirth?

6. What are your thoughts on natural childbirth versus medical interventions?

7. How do you support breastfeeding and postpartum care?

8. Can you provide references or testimonials from past clients?

9. What is your stance on involving partners or family members during labor and delivery? Talk about who you’re wanting with you during your birth (partner, mom, doula) & if they’re comfortable working with that.

10. What is your birth philosophy?

Every woman deserves a team that makes her feel seen, safe, and supported. Take your time, ask the questions that are most important to you, and trust your intuition. You got this, mama!
